We are happily to share the news that as DUSA biggest and flagship event in Suzhou, DUSA Oktoberfest 2021 is coming back and will take place from September 9th to 12th 2021 at Kempinski Hotel Suzhou. DUSA Oktoberfest is a traditional fest since 18 years ago.

Interview of a DUSA Member GM

-4.1 Interviewee: Harald Fitzek, General Manager of Kempinski

    1. Can you briefly introduce yourself? And your role in Kempinski Hotel Suzhou

I was born in Bavaria, Germany and started my career as a chef apprentice in a Michelin Star restaurant where I spent my early years before I joined the Kempinski Hotel Munich Airportin 1996. With 27 years of age I was promoted to Executive Chef at the Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz, Gozo Malta and Kempinski Hotel Baltchug Moscow later on. After that, my professional career has taken me to numerous management positions in Ukraine, UK, Germany, Russia and Egypt with the Carlson Rezidor & Capella Hotel Group. In 2017, I returned to Kempinski as General Manager for the Kempinski Hotel in Dalian, China. Followed with my next assignment for Kempinski in Taiyuan, and finally my family and I have arrived in January 2021 to Suzhou. The Kempinski Hotel Suzhou is currently undergoing the first phase of rooms refurbishments followed by upgrades in our public areas to continue our success as Europe's oldest luxury hotel group.

    2. What were the top 3 challenges you faced when running your operations and how did you address those ?

As most businesses we all have been challenged by the Pandemic, occasional outbreaks have had a large impact on our operation last year as well as in the beginning of this year. For us it meant to fully cooperate with government guidelines to support the pandemic prevention as well as a focus on domestic companies due to travel restrictions and new digital revenue income activates.

Hiring Talents continues to be challenging within the hospitality, the fast growth of our industry requires much more talented caring people than currently interested to join our industry. One way is to listen to younger generations to their needs so that we can provide an environment where their purpose in life can be supported. Our strategy to anticipate and fulfill external customer expectations applies as well to our team members to fulfill their expectations to have happy talents and ultimately happy customers.

    3. As DUSA's most important festival, How will Kempinski host 2021 DUSA Oktoberfest in September, will there anything new from the past Oktoberfest?

I believe the biggest news are that we are back to host this year's DUSA Oktoberfest on our lawn with an authentic Oktoberfest tent here at the Kempinski Hotel. Furthermore, we have tailored the sponsorship packages to give our sponsors more flexibility, increased service and some new entertainment goodies for a great experience such as an original Cowbell (Kuhglocke) on the table for gold sponsors to hit the bell to keep the beer floating

    4. What is the development plan for Kempinski, as the Luxury hotels are increasing in Suzhou, How to keep Kempinski's advantages?

Our biggest advantage beside our European heritage is our unique location at Dushu lake with an amazing outdoor area for any kind of event. We are more a destination than a hotel, hence, the success of our Oktoberfest cooperation. As mentioned earlier on, we have started to refurbish our rooms and continue with upgrades in public areas to present to our guests a new look, feel and experience. My personal focus will be on the individual development of all team members to continuously reinvent and increase our services for a luxury guest journey.

    5. What originally brought you to Suzhou? Do you enjoy the life in Suzhou?

My pervious assignment with Kempinski in Taiyuan came to an end. My family and I wanted to continue to explore China so we were evaluating where we can have the best environment for our children and us. Suzhou itself is a great destination with many possibilities and great surroundings close by. And yes, I do enjoy life in Suzhou; I met so many great people in my first month and build new friendships already and I can't wait to host for me my first Oktoberfest in Suzhou. I really missed this beautiful atmosphere of a great party.

    6. What do you like to do with your free time?

I spend most time with my wife and our 2 little children; we like to explore the surroundings and Chinese culture. In addition, I am passionate golfer, foodie and enjoy some great company around us.
