KEEPING UP! with DUSA Members

Keeping up with: Lucas Bretz, G.M. of Global Advanced Manufacturing Institute (GAMI).

Q: Can you briefly introduce yourself? And your role in GAMI.

My name is Lucas Bretz, and I am heading the Global Advanced Manufacturing Institute (GAMI). We are supporting our partners in developing individual strategies for operational excellence. GAMI is as well officially representing Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and bringing the innovative German spirit to Suzhou.

Q: What are the major challenges automation is still facing?

I want to name three challenges. First, we are facing customers that request products that tend to have more variants and shorter life cycles. Demand is not consistent. Therefore, automation solutions need to be flexible and scalable to be used for other products or the next product generation. Second, qualified and knowledgeable staff is required to maintain and operate the machines efficiently. Job roles change and operators need to be continuously trained. Workers with lower cognitive abilities will face redundancy. Third, security systems for automized factories need to prevent targeted attacks to hinder production or influence product quality.

Q: How is China positioned in the automation industry compared to Germany?

Germany's baseline in automation is without a doubt excellent. However, the question is whether the digital economy in Germany is strong enough to take the next step together with industry. Due to its established position, it is of course also a challenge to generate the necessary will to innovate. The flourishing Chinese Internet companies are rolling up the field from a different angle and using their experience in other market segments to focus on digitization. I see advantages here, particularly in the fields of digital business models for automation solutions and factory digitization. These two perspectives make it so interesting to learn from each other and to further foster exchange between Germany and China.

Q: How can Automation play a role in improving industries sustainability?

A circular economy decouples production from the consumption of limited resources. Products will be returned at the end of their lifecycle, disassembled and parts be restored for a product as good as new. These remanufacturing activities are already taking place today, but on manual scale because of the sheer complexity involved. Every returned product has seen a different life cycle, requiring a different treatment for remanufacturing. Production systems for remanufacturing combine all the challenges that we are already seeing with smaller batch sizes in smart manufacturing. Automizing these remanufacturing activities offers enormous potential for value creation while increasing sustainability.

Q: What originally brought you to Suzhou? Do you enjoy the life in Suzhou?

Originally, I was taking part in a student exchange program during my master studies. So, I spent half a year already in this wonderful city. At the beginning of 2021, I was offered the position at GAMI and am now happy to be back. Suzhou has wonderful places I sincerely appreciate. Here, especially the Bonsai Garden at Tiger Hill is one of my favorites.

Q: What do you like to do with your free time?

In my private life, I like doing sports of all kinds and cooking. Further, I find joy and inspiration in exploring different countries and cultures.
