Topic: Soft Skills - The Key to Project Success
Join IBSS Senior Associate Professor, Dr Raymond Young, for a focus on project management to argue that the key to success is through soft-skills. Firstly, research will be presented to show that current certifications are not having the desired impact on success rates. Then the latest developments in the project management field will be presented to explain that current certifications focus too much on technical skills and not enough on strategy and soft-skills. The presentation will finish by introducing a tool to address this issue. The discussion will explore whether this finding can be applied to the business disciplines in general, whether there is an opportunity to collaborate on the delivery of soft-skills and for XJTLU to take a leadership role in professional education.

Dr. Raymond Young’s career alternates between industry, consulting and academia. He is currently a Senior Associate Professor at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) and the Program Director of MSc Project Management. He has a decade of management consulting experience culminating in a CIO role within Fujitsu Australia.
Dr. Young is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Project Management (FAIPM) and a fellow of the Governance Institute of Australia (FGIA). His research has been published by Standards Australia as a handbook explaining how boards and top managers influence business projects to succeed (HB280). His research is potentially the first major breakthrough in IT project failure in over 50 years and the adoption of his recommendations may lead to a 3.1% increase in GDP.
His other expertise is in performance measurement, business process reengineering, activity-based management and logistics. His significant clients have included ColgatePalmolive, BHP, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Telstra, Department of Defence, Department of Education, Department of Health, Department of Social Services, Electricity Trust of South Australia and Prospect Electricity.
