We find ourselves in a world of increasing complexity due to individualized products with simultaneously shorter product life cycles. Existing potentials of Industry 4.0 must be exploited by companies in order to remain competitive. Future major innovation potential can be leveraged through structured collaboration between product and production system development, also known as product-production co-design. This requires the use of digital twins, which map the current status of both the individual product and production in real time.
A Digital Twin is simply a virtual representation of a real-world product or asset. With IoT sensors, the twin can receive continuous real-time data from the object. This specific one-to-one correspondence allows to virtually monitor the object and, in some cases, even interact with the object. Monitoring the current state via sensors increases the situational awareness and supports decision making processes. By minimizing error rates, shortening development cycles and even by enabling new business models, digital representations of products help to increase the competitiveness of companies. Shortening product lifecycles can be of particular interest for manufacturing companies as Digital Twins allow them to test, validate and improve new products or processes virtually before the start of production without going through expensive and time-consuming physical prototyping.
The benefits of Digital Twins for Manufacturers are manifold. Aimed to sharing practical applications, providing a guideline and know-how to master the transformation towards Smart Factory. DUSA will hold the workshop together with GAMI and CENIT on Aug 12 (THU), to share the challenges faced by the enterprises as well as common approaches and best-practices.

Part I: Digital twins in Industry 4.0: Sensor technology and product models for optimized development and production processes

Mr. Lucas Bretz
General Manager at GAMIMr. Lucas Bretz is the General Manager of GAMI. He completed his mechanical engineering studies at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT, Germany) with a master’s degree in 2018. He was working as a research associate and project manager at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) for more than three years. Mr. Lucas Bretz conducted several research and industry consulting projects in the areas of production, logistics and quality optimization in collaboration with internationally renowned companies. He gained fruitful international experiences not only in Germany and China, but also in Canada and Nicaragua. In his PhD thesis, he focuses on function-oriented quality assurance of hybrid fiber-reinforced polymers using artificial intelligence and digital twins. Since 2021, Mr. Lucas Bretz serves as the General Manager of GAMI, establishing fruitful Sino-German collaborations between industry and research in the field of smart manufacturing.

General Manager at CENIT Software Technology SuzhouMr. Tobias Off (MBA) is the General Manager of CENIT Software Technology Suzhou. He graduated from National Taiwan University (Taipei) about a decade ago and spent most of the following years in Mainland China. As General Manager of the economic promotion agency of the German Southwest in China he helped numerous small and medium-sized enterprises to enter the Chinese market. Later, he took on an additional role as the official representative of the state of Baden-Württemberg to China. During these years he closely followed China’s developments and ambitions regarding industrial automation. In 2018, he joined Germany based CENIT AG, a leading IT consultancy and software company featuring more than 30 years of experience. With Mr. Off leading its China expansion plans, CENIT opened its Chinese subsidiary in Suzhou in 2021 to bring the latest trends in digital factory software to the largest robot market in the world. 3D simulation and programming for industrial robots - including digital twin functions - are the mainstay of CENIT’s very own solution called FASTSUITE. The software is globally established in the automotive and aerospace industry (amongst others) and is now also fully available and supported in China.
