Dear DUSA Members and Friends,

Welcome to the IBSS Online Brown Bag Autumn-Winter Series! It comes to the third session. Dr. David Dufour will share the topic "Impact on the Future of Supply Chain in the Post-Covid-19 Era" with us.

The Third Session

Topic:  Impact on the Future of Supply Chain in the Post-Covid-19 Era

With the rise of globalisation, supply chain networks have been optimised to identify minimum lead times at the lowest possible price.

Decades-long efforts have focused on the optimisation to minimise costs, reduction of inventories, and drive up asset utilisation has removed buffers and flexibility to absorb disruptions. However, with rapid political developments, a shift towards consumers buying niche products and, now, global pandemics have revealed the weaknesses that lie at the heart of this model of manufacturing and distribution.

COVID-19 might be the major event that will force many companies, and entire industries, to rethink and transform their global supply chain models.

One fact is beyond doubt: It has already exposed the vulnerabilities of many organisations, especially those who have a high dependence on China to fulfil their need for raw materials or the finished product.

Yet, many things are not going to change. Consumers will continue to want low prices (especially in a recession), and firms won't be able to charge more just because they manufacture in higher-cost home markets. The competition will ensure that the challenge for companies will be to make their supply chains more resilient without weakening their competitiveness.
