The role of leadership regarding Psychological Safety at the Workplace
Psychological Safety is defined as a team climate characterized by interpersonal trust and mutual respect in which people are comfortable being themselves.
[Professor Amy Edmondson, Harvard Business School, author of the book "The Fearless Organization"] In the research project "Aristotle" Google was investigating its own workforce regarding key success factors of high performing teams. The research which encompassed 180 teams and 37,000 employees during a period of two years revealed that psychological safety was by far the most important team norm for high-performing and innovative teams.
Positive effects of a psychological safe and high trust workplace include increased confidence, creativity, trust, and productivity. Research from 2017 found that people in high-trust companies report 74% less stress, 29% more satisfaction with their lives and 40% less burnout than people at low-trust companies.
In short, only if people feel safe at the workplace, they can be at their best in a sustainable way.
In his Keynote speech Tilman Rieger will talk about "The role of leadership regarding Psychological Safety at the Workplace". Among others, Tilman will shed light on the misperceptions regarding Psychological Safety and how leaders can contribute to make the workplace psychologically safer for their staff without having to give up holding people accountable for their actions.
